Treacherous Against God
Would you consider yourself to be an enemy of God? No? Do you think it is because you are not having premarital sex? Do you think it is because you do not use profanity? Do you think it is because you are not out at parties every weekend? Or that you do not wear the skimpiest clothes? Or that you do not smoke weed? Or get drunk every time the opportunity arises? If you do not do any of the things above, I commend you and I am proud of you and so is God. However, if your heart is longing for the approval of man, you indeed are treacherous against God.
You’ve heard it before; it is the matter of our hearts. Meaning, it is our treason against God in our hearts. Constantly seeking after everything and everybody else instead of God, turning our backs to Him. Treason is the offense of acting to overthrow one’s government or to harm or kill its sovereign. And a sovereign is a monarch, a king, a queen, or some other supreme ruler.
In Jeremiah 3, God called Judah and Israel treacherous. His very own chose children were backsliding, playing the harlot with other gods. That applies to you and me too. When we are putting the worries of this world and the desires of our heart above Him, we are attempting to overthrow Him as King in our heart. Might I add, it is always a failed attempt. We find ourselves back at His feet every time. Probably more broken and disappointed than before.
“Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say: ‘Return, backsliding Israel,’ says the Lord; ‘I will not cause My anger to fall on you. For I am merciful,’ says the Lord; ‘I will not remain angry forever. Only acknowledge your iniquity, That you have transgressed against the Lord your God, And have scattered your charms To alien deities under every green tree, And you have not obeyed My voice,’ says the Lord.”
Treason is a violation of allegiance to one’s sovereign or to one’s state. It is the betrayal of a trust of confidence, a breach of faith. When we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, He becomes our personal King. He was King before you accepted Him. Now, you have your own King.
You now have the privilege to worship Him. You now can have a personal relationship with Him. You now can speak to Him personally. You can now come to Him whenever and, however. But, when you try to fill a void with someone or something other than Him, you are in violation to your allegiance to Him. You are saying to Him that He is not enough and there is more outside of Him. That is the very trick of the enemy.
Eve was led to question the words of God and believed that He was holding out on her. Eve committed treason against God when she believed the enemy and allowed comfort to herself by fulfilling her fleshly desires. Eve helped the enemy secure ammo, something to pull out his pocket when he needs to persuade the children of God that God is holding back from them.
“Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in a day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.
The devil did the exact same thing with Jesus after He fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. Thank you, Jesus, that you knew who you were and did not fall for the tricks of the enemy! Jesus has confidence in God the Father that we all need to strive for.
He has never had a breach in His contract to God. Jesus willfully hung on that cross for you and me. In the garden, He prayed for God to remove the will for His life. But yet, He got up from there and said, “not my will, but yours”.
Matthew 26: 39
“He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”
“Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ “
I get it. You want that husband or wife. You want that degree. You want that job. You want more money. You want kids. You want to travel and create memories. You want more. Whatever it is you want; it will not comfort you as God can. It will not create a sense of completeness. And it will not be easier in your life if you just had it, whatever that 'it' is for you. I heard a pastor once say to be careful where you are investing.
Are you investing in the temporal world we live in or in the eternal heaven we are promised by living for Jesus Christ? God is enough. You will not always feel like He is enough. But just because it doesn’t feel like He is, doesn’t change the fact that He is. He is sovereign. He is King. He is God.
"For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings, if you thoroughly execute judgement between a man and his neighbor, if you do not oppress the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, or walk after other gods to your hurt, then I will cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever."
